Hi, I'm Guillermo Prol-Castelo

I’m a PhD candidate in Biomedicine (Bioinformatics) at Universitat Pompeu Fabra, working with the Machine Learning for Biomedical Research and Computational Biology groups at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center. My research sits at the intersection of generative AI, representation learning, and explainability, applied to understanding how cancer progresses and how its subtypes are defined. Recent work includes uncovering a molecular continuum between medulloblastoma subgroups using synthetic data generation, and interpretable forecasting of kidney cancer progression combining generative AI with symbolic reasoning. I’m particularly interested in using synthetic data and fairness-aware machine learning to address data scarcity in rare disease research, and in making these methods interpretable for both clinical and outreach audiences.
